Why Is Waste Disposal Getting More Expensive in the UK?

Landfill tax has gone up again and fly-tipping keeps rising. Here is what is pushing up the cost of getting rid of rubbish, and how to keep your bill fair.

If it feels like getting rid of rubbish costs more every year, you are right. The price of waste disposal in the UK has risen steadily, and the reasons are mostly out of any waste company's hands.

Landfill tax keeps going up

Every tonne of general waste that goes to landfill is taxed by the government. From 1 April 2026 the standard rate of landfill tax is £130.75 per tonne. That is before the tip charges its own gate fee, and before the cost of the van, the fuel and the labour.

The tax goes up most years, usually in line with inflation or faster. It is meant to push waste away from landfill and towards recycling, and that works, but it also means every load costs more to dispose of.

More items need special handling

A growing list of items can no longer just be thrown in with general waste:

  • Sofas and upholstered chairs can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and must be kept separate.
  • Fridges and freezers need their refrigerant gases recovered.
  • TVs, monitors and electricals are WEEE and have to be recycled separately.
  • Plasterboard and mattresses often attract extra charges at transfer stations.

Sorting and taking these to the right place takes more time and costs more than a simple trip to the tip.

Fly-tipping is rising too

Higher costs have a nasty side effect. In 2024/25, councils in England dealt with 777,000 fly-tipping incidents involving household waste, up 13% on the year before. Household waste made up 62% of all fly-tipping.

A lot of that comes from people trying to save money, either by dumping waste themselves or by paying someone cheap who dumps it for them. Clearing it up costs councils, landowners and taxpayers millions every year.

How to keep your bill fair

  • Get a clear price up front. A fixed price based on how much space your waste takes up avoids surprises.
  • Separate what you can. Recycle cardboard, metal and garden waste yourself if you have the time.
  • Book the right size of load. Paying for a full load when you only need a quarter is money wasted.
  • Never choose on price alone. The cheapest quote is often cheap because the waste is not being disposed of legally.

The bottom line

Waste disposal costs more because the tax, the rules and the processing all cost more. A legitimate, licensed carrier has to pay all of those costs. If someone quotes far below everyone else, it is worth asking how.
