Cheap Rubbish Removal: Warning Signs of Rogue Traders

Unlicensed carriers often undercut everyone else, then fly-tip your waste. Here are the warning signs to look out for before you hand over your rubbish.

A quote that is half the price of everyone else's can look like a bargain. With rubbish removal, it is often the most expensive mistake you can make.

Why rogue traders can be so cheap

A licensed waste carrier pays landfill tax, tip gate fees, recycling charges, insurance and registration. Those costs are built into every price.

An unlicensed carrier can skip all of them by dumping your waste in a country lane, a field or someone else's bin store. That is how they undercut legitimate companies, and it is why fly-tipping keeps rising.

Warning signs to look out for

  • A price far below other quotes. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  • Cash only. No card payment, no invoice and no paper trail.
  • No waste carrier registration number, or excuses when you ask for one.
  • No company name, website or address, just a mobile number.
  • Adverts on social media or leaflets with no business details.
  • Unmarked vans or a car with a trailer.
  • No receipt or waste transfer note offered after the job.
  • Pressure to decide now, often by turning up at your door offering to take things away.

What it can cost you

If your waste is found dumped, the council can trace it back to you. You could face a fixed penalty of up to £600 for failing in your duty of care. If it goes to court the fine is unlimited, and some cases have ended in fines and costs of £5,000 to £50,000 or more. On top of that, you have already paid the rogue trader, who will not be answering their phone.

So the "cheap" quote can end up costing more than doing it properly in the first place.

How to protect yourself

  • Get more than one quote so you know what a fair price looks like.
  • Check the carrier on the Environment Agency public register before you book.
  • Pay by card or bank transfer, never cash in hand to someone you cannot trace.
  • Ask where your waste is going and get it in writing.
  • Keep your receipt or waste transfer note.

If you think your waste has been fly-tipped

Report it to your local council as soon as possible and give them any details you have, such as the trader's name, phone number, vehicle registration and how you paid. Showing that you were misled can help your case.

Choose a carrier you can check

At Waste Removal Solutions you get a fixed price online before you book, card payment, a registered waste carrier and paperwork for every job. It may not be the cheapest quote you find, but you will know exactly where your rubbish has gone.
