When you pay someone to take away your waste, you are trusting them to dispose of it properly. But did you know that if they fly-tip it, you could be the one who gets fined? This is why the waste carrier licence exists, and why it matters so much.
What is a waste carrier licence?
In England and Wales, any business that transports waste as part of its work must register with the Environment Agency as a waste carrier. The equivalent bodies cover Scotland and Northern Ireland. Registration means the carrier is known to the regulator and is legally responsible for disposing of waste correctly.
Why it protects you
Under the law, you have a duty of care for your waste. That duty does not end when someone drives off with it. If your rubbish is later found dumped in a lane or field and traced back to you, you can be prosecuted unless you can show you handed it to a registered carrier. Cheap cash-in-hand collections advertised on social media are a common trap.
How to check a carrier
- Ask for their waste carrier registration number.
- Check it for free on the Environment Agency public register.
- Ask what happens to your waste and where it goes.
- Get a receipt or waste transfer note showing your address, the items collected, and the carrier details.
A legitimate company will happily provide all of this. If someone dodges the question or only takes cash with no paperwork, walk away.
