How to Prepare for a House Clearance
By Waste Removal Solutions · 1 October 2026

Whether you are moving, downsizing or clearing a loved one’s home, a little preparation makes a house clearance faster, cheaper and less stressful.
A house clearance often comes at a difficult time, such as a move, a bereavement or a property sale. A little preparation beforehand makes the day itself much smoother and can noticeably reduce the cost.
1. Remove anything you want to keep
Go through the property first and take out anything of personal or financial value. Check drawers, wardrobes, lofts, sheds and under beds for documents, photos, jewellery, keys and cash. Once items are loaded, they are hard to get back.
2. Set aside things to sell or donate
Good-quality furniture with fire labels, working appliances and household items can often go to charity shops or reuse schemes. This helps the environment and reduces the volume you pay to clear.
3. Note any special items
Mattresses, fridges and freezers, sofas, tyres and TVs need extra handling, so it helps to count them before you book. We price these as listed special items so there are no surprises.
4. Think about access
Let us know about parking restrictions, flights of stairs, a lift, or long walks from the van to the door. If you can reserve a parking space close to the entrance, the job will go faster.
5. Estimate the volume
A one-bedroom flat typically needs somewhere around a Large Load (6 cubic yards), while a full family house can need several larger loads. Our calculator explains what each size holds, and you only pay for the space you use.
6. Be there, or arrange access
Someone should be there at the start to confirm what goes and what stays. After that, we can work on our own if you leave keys with a neighbour or agent.
On the day
We load everything, sweep the cleared rooms and take all waste to licensed facilities, recycling as much as possible. You get a record of the collection for your duty of care.
