How to Dispose of a Sofa in the UK (2026 Guide)

Old sofas cannot simply go to landfill any more. Here is what the rules say, your options for getting rid of one, and what it costs.

Getting rid of an old sofa is harder than it used to be. Since 2023, most upholstered domestic seating is treated as a special waste stream in England and Wales, which means it cannot just be thrown in a skip or sent to landfill. Here is what you need to know.

Why sofas are treated differently

Many sofas, armchairs and footstools contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) — chemicals that were used in flame retardants for foam and fabric. Environment Agency guidance says waste upholstered seating that may contain POPs must be kept separate and destroyed properly, usually by high-temperature incineration. It should not be ripped apart, mixed with general waste or landfilled.

That covers sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen and dining chairs with padded seats, office chairs, futons and footstools. It does not cover mattresses, curtains, carpets or bean bags.

Your options

Sell or donate it. If it is in good condition and still has its fire safety label, a charity shop or furniture reuse scheme may collect it for free.

Council bulky waste collection. Most councils offer this for a fee, although waiting times can be long and you usually have to put the sofa outside yourself.

A licensed waste carrier. We collect from inside your home, carry it out, and make sure it goes to a facility that handles upholstered seating correctly.

What it costs with us

A sofa is priced as a special item at £40, added to the load size it goes in. A two-seater and a three-seater together usually fit in a Small Load, so the total stays low, and you can add other rubbish in the same visit.

Never leave it on the street

A sofa dumped outside a house or next to a bin store counts as fly-tipping, even if you meant someone to take it. You are legally responsible for your waste until it reaches someone licensed to carry it, so always check that whoever you use has a waste carrier licence.
