Getting rid of an old mattress is one of the most common clearance jobs we handle, and it is also one of the trickiest for households to deal with alone. Mattresses are bulky, awkward to transport, and cannot simply go in your household bin. Here is everything you need to know.
Why mattresses are hard to dispose of
Mattresses are made from a mix of foam, springs, and fabric that most kerbside recycling schemes will not accept. Their size means they do not fit in a wheelie bin, and many local tips now charge for them or limit how many you can drop off. Left in a garden or alleyway, they quickly become an eyesore and a magnet for further fly-tipping.
Your legal options
1. Local council bulky waste collection. Most councils offer a bulky-item collection for a fee, typically between GBP 15 and GBP 40 depending on the area and how many items you have. Booking windows can be a week or more.
2. Take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre. Free in many areas, but you will need a vehicle large enough to carry it and a way to lift it.

Why you should never fly-tip
