Garage and Loft Clearance: A Step-by-Step Guide

Garages and lofts slowly fill up with things nobody quite decided to throw away. Clearing one out frees up valuable space, and it is far less daunting with a plan.

Step 1: Decide what you are keeping

Before anything is moved, walk through and decide the broad categories: keep, sell or donate, and dispose. Be honest. If something has sat in a box since you moved in, you probably do not need it.

Step 2: Check for things that need special handling

A few items cannot go out with general rubbish:

• Paint, oil, chemicals and gas bottles need specialist disposal. Your local recycling centre can usually take them.
• Fridges and freezers contain refrigerant gases and must be recycled properly.
• Old sofas and padded chairs may contain POPs and must be kept separate.
• Asbestos must only be handled by a licensed specialist. If you think old garage roofing or panels may contain it, do not disturb them.

Step 3: Make access easy

Clear a path from the garage door or loft hatch to the driveway. For lofts, make sure the ladder is secure and the boarding is safe to walk on. Good access means a faster job and a lower bill.

Step 4: Estimate the volume

Most single garages fill somewhere between a Medium Load (4 cubic yards, £219) and a Large Load (6 cubic yards, £309). A fully packed double garage can need more. If you are unsure, pick the closest size and we will confirm on the day. You only pay for the space you use.

Step 5: Let someone else do the lifting

We load everything ourselves, from the loft hatch or the back of the garage, and sweep up before we leave. All waste goes to licensed facilities, and as much as possible is recycled.
