Can You Put a Mattress in a Skip?

The short answer is no. Here is why mattresses are banned from most skips, what it means for you, and the easiest way to get one taken away.

If you are clearing a bedroom and wondering whether the old mattress can just go in a skip, the short answer is no — most skip companies will not accept them, and for good reason.

Why mattresses are banned from skips

Mattresses are one of the hardest items to process. They are bulky, they compress and spring back (wasting skip space and making them dangerous to compact), and they soak up water and become extremely heavy. Above all, they cannot go to landfill compacted with general waste — they have to be separated and shredded so the foam, fibre, springs and fabric can be recycled individually. Because of this, skip firms either refuse them outright or charge a large surcharge if one is found in the skip.

What that means for you

Putting a mattress in a skip usually results in an extra fee, or the skip being refused for collection until it is removed. It is simply not worth the risk.

The easy alternative

A man-and-van service is designed for exactly this. We take mattresses of any size — single, double, king or divan bases — and route them to a proper recycling facility. We charge a flat £35 per mattress, and we carry it out for you, so there is no dragging it down the stairs or leaving it in the garden.

Can you recycle a mattress yourself?

Some council household waste centres accept mattresses, though many now charge, and you need a suitable vehicle and someone to help lift it. Charities will only take mattresses in genuinely good, clean condition with the fire-safety label intact.

The simplest route

Add your mattress to any load on our instant calculator, or book it on its own. We will collect it from the room it is in, dispose of it responsibly, and tidy up before we leave.
