Bedford Tip vs Rubbish Removal: Rules to Know and When We're Quicker

Thinking of a run to the Bedford tip? Here is what to know about the rules, and when booking a rubbish collection saves you time and effort.

Bedford sits right on the River Great Ouse, with busy town streets and growing villages like Biddenham, Elstow and Bromham around it. Whether you are clearing a house, a garden or a garage, you have two main options: the tip, or a collection.

The Bedford recycling centre

Bedford Borough Council runs the household waste recycling centre for residents. It accepts most household waste for free. As with most tips:

  • Vans and trailers may need a permit, or may be restricted.
  • Rubble, plasterboard and tyres may be limited or charged for.
  • Trade waste is not accepted.

Rules change, so check the Bedford Borough Council website before you go.

A recent Bedford job

On Beehive Lane in Bedford we collected a black leather two-seater and three-seater sofa from the driveway. Two sofas would not fit in a car, and the bulky waste service can mean a wait. We had both loaded and the driveway clear in one visit.

When the tip makes sense

If you have a car, a few bags and a free afternoon, the council tip is a good option. It is cheap or free for household waste, and the staff will point you to the right skip.

When we are quicker

  • You do not have a van or trailer. Sofas, mattresses, fridges and wardrobes do not fit in most cars.
  • The waste is heavy. Rubble, soil and plasterboard are hard work to lift, and many tips limit or charge for them.
  • You are short on time. We do all the lifting and loading, and you do not need to queue, book a slot or make several trips.
  • It is in an awkward place. Lofts, garages, back gardens and upstairs flats are no problem for our team.

What it costs with us

Prices in Bedford start from £84 for a Mini Load, with all loading included. You can get an instant price online in about a minute, and pay when you book.

Always use a licensed carrier

Whoever takes your rubbish away, check they hold a waste carrier licence from the Environment Agency. If unlicensed collectors fly-tip your waste, you can be fined, and some cases have reached £5,000 to £50,000 or more. We are fully licensed (Environment Agency CBDU370542), and we send you a digital waste transfer note for every job.
